Snowpack-forced browsing by deer onto Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris): Selection of low volatile leaf terpenoid concentrations for browsing
نویسنده
چکیده
A comparison between heavily and lightly browsed Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) trees revealed that the yield of volatile leaf oil and tree height were highly significantly different. Higher volatile oil yield was positively correlated with lightly browsed trees, and lower oil yield correlated with heavily browsed trees. Tree height was negatively correlated with terpenoid yield, indicating younger trees produced more oil, perhaps as a defense mechanisms. Methanol extractables were significantly higher in highly browsed trees, suggesting that sugars and carbohydrates might be attractive to browsing deer. Hexane extractables were not significantly different. Published on-line www.phytologia.org Phytologia 96(2): 84-88 (April 1, 2014).

the condition of scots pine stands in lahemaa national Park , estonia 25 years after browsing by moose ( Alces alces )
The effects after 25 years of moose browsing on Scots pine stands in Lahemaa National Park were evaluated, emphasizing economic damage. A re-evaluation in 2001 examined stands that had been evaluated in 1975–1976. Moose damage significantly affected the tree species composition which changed over time as pine dominance increased and the number of mixed stands declined. The smaller proportion of...

The threat from pests and pathogens to native and commercially planted forest trees is unprecedented and expected to increase under climate change. The degree to which forests respond to threats from pathogens depends on their adaptive capacity, which is determined largely by genetically controlled variation in susceptibility of the individual trees within them and the heritability and evolvabi...
متن کاملClimate influences the leaf area/sapwood area ratio in Scots pine.
We tested the hypothesis that the leaf area/sapwood area ratio in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) is influenced by site differences in water vapor pressure deficit of the air (D). Two stands of the same provenance were selected, one in western Scotland and one in eastern England, so that effects resulting from age, genetic variability, density and fertility were minimized. Compared with the Sc...

Nucleotide polymorphism in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) was studied in the gene encoding phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (Pal, EC 4.3.1.5). Scots pine, like many other pine species, has a large current population size. The observed levels of inbreeding depression suggest that Scots pine may have a high mutation rate to deleterious alleles. Many Scots pine markers such as isozymes, RFLPs, and micro...
متن کاملReduction of ethylene emission from Scots pine elicited by insect egg secretion.
Pinus sylvestris L. is known to activate indirect defence in response to attack by an herbivorous sawfly. Egg deposition by the sawfly Diprion pini L. induces pine to release, three days after egg laying, locally and systemically terpenoid volatiles that attract parasitoids to kill the eggs. The elicitor of the pine's response is located in the sawfly's oviduct secretion enveloping the eggs aft...
